乡愁 (xiāngchóu) is the Mandarin word for homesickness: the ache for the place you come from. 乡 is the home place, 愁 is sorrow, and the two characters do the work of a whole sentence in English.

On the back, a Chinatown gate in Sydney with lanterns strung beneath it. The sign above the arch reads CHINATOWN, SYDNEY, NSW, and the inscription is 四海一家, "four seas, one family". On the front, the word alone, small, over the heart.

Part of There's No Translation: ten words from ten languages for feelings English can't say in one word, each placed somewhere far from where it began.
